1. Hunger in North Dakota Study: Looking for Volunteers

This spring, the Great Plains Food Bank will be conducting the largest hunger study ever seen in ND and western MN. We will travel to every county in our service area and conduct 500 face-to-face interviews with clients of food pantries and soup kitchens - that's where we could use your help!

We are looking for volunteers to interview clients across ND and Clay County, MN from March through May 2018. You can volunteer for one site or many. Volunteers must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Have own transportation to and from interview sites;
  • Be literate and able to verbally read questions to clients;
  • Record client answers on paper and have legible handwriting;
  • Be enthusiastic, flexible and patient; and
  • Exercise discretion, respect and show sensitivity to clients.

If this is an opportunity that interests you or you have questions, please  reach out to Taylor at tsyvertson@greatplainsfoodbank.org. Thanks so much for considering!

2. STAND UP FOR SNAP!

If you haven't signed a virtual postcard yet, there is still time!

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is included in the Nutrition Title of the Farm Bill. Our current Farm Bill expires in September 2018 and discussions are already taking place in DC. Based on past Farm Bills and what we are hearing from Congress, we anticipate SNAP will be at risk of significant cuts and detrimental policy changes.

On any given day, 54,000 of our neighbors rely on SNAP to put food on their table. We invite you to stand beside them and send a strong, unified message to our federal delegation - SNAP is good for ND

Our staff and Board of Directors will hand deliver the postcards to Senators Heitkamp and Hoeven in late February.

We have 300 signatures so far and our goal is 500 signatures by February 24!
Will you help us get there by forwarding this link to your family & friends? Together, we stand strong.

3. ENDING HUNGER 2.0 ROLL OUT

Ending Hunger 2.0 is Great Plains Food Bank's bold next step that goes beyond food to address both hunger and its root causes through Advocacy, Research and Community Based Solutions. At press conferences later this month we will officially roll out the new initiative. You can get a sneak peek of this work at www.EndingHunger20.org.

Watch for more details in next month's newsletter.

Thank you for speaking up and speaking out.
Together, we will end hunger.
